Guidance for Purchasing and Support of Inspection Tablets

The introduction of SIRE 2.0 meant OCIMF would rely on the use of intrinsically safe tablets to efficiently capture inspection data. Because OCIMF acknowledges that inspectors have personal preferences for devices OCIMF routinely evaluates available devices for hardware suitability and compatibility.   

OCIMF provides this information to ensure the OCIMF application will run on an inspector's device and to assist in the procurement process.

If there is another intrinsically safe (EX-Zone 1/21) Android device that you would like OCIMF to consider contact OCIMF Support with the manufacturer and model information and OCIMF will review it. OCIMF will not consider devices encased in a third-party explosion proof case.

Approved Tablets

OCIMF has defined specific device requirements for bring your own device (BYOD) inspector tablets.  Following a review of the available intrinsically safe (EX-Zone1/21) Android tablets, OCIMF has found that the following devices meet all requirements.

Since manufacturers cannot serve all their customers directly, they have partnered with regional resellers to deliver their products in an official capacity. These resellers offer new products and with approved pricing.

To protect your device and simplify use as you move about the vessel, OCIMF recommends the i.safe MOBILE Black Leather Case. Because of the size difference, they are product specific for the IS 930 and IS940.

Support

Regardless of where you purchase your tablet, tablet hardware support is managed directly through the i.safe MOBILE support by completing an online support request.  For optimal service, the support is provided through regional centres, which centre will be determined when you complete the support form on their website.

Device manufacturers only provide support for the hardware, OCIMF applications installed on your device will be supported by OCIMF using the Support desk (email support@ocimf.org). 

Any other software you install will be supported by that software maker and not the tablet manufacturer or OCIMF Support Desk.

Purchasing Used Tablets

OCIMF recognises there are opportunities to purchase a previously owned tablet.  While intrinsically safe tablets are rugged devices built to withstand impact, extreme temperatures, water, dust, vibration, and many other forms of stress in hazardous areas, there is a risk of the unknown when making the decision to purchase a used device.  The option exists for i.safe MOBILE to recertify the device, for a reasonable fee. Keep in mind that should it fail, you will have to purchase another approved device.

Authorized Tablet Resellers

This list is organized by region, country, and the current Reseller with email contact. It is important to note that delivery times vary by country, up to six weeks, and Resellers will not deliver devices outside of their respective countries. Be certain to include the mobile case with strap in the order.
